SADU 2.0
SADI Art Residency, Kuwait 2016
Marble
106 X 66 cm
Much like the threads that make it up, Sadu was many ideas woven together. It brought together many different aspects of the local culture and expressed them in its craftsmanship. For this, Sadu was more than just tapestry, it was a language that enabled story telling. It reflected through its use of color, fabric, and symbol the lives of those weaving it. The very craft itself too held truths about the individuals practicing it.
Their values, culture, traditions, or just the most basic aspects of their lives that one might normally take for granted. However, the art of sadu making is a dying art. The artisans of yesteryear were replaced by industrial grade machines, and the story tellers now speak in stone, plastic, and pixels. The reality of its obsolescence is what inspired to reinterpret the essence of sadu making’s essence, its combination of craft and narration, for the modern day. Utilizing machines with laser cutting precision to reflect on and retell a story about our modern culture. A story written simultaneously in the pictograms within the piece and the very craft behind it.
The central space of the piece represents the present on the surface but also acts as a gateway to the artists past. Staples from the artist’s childhood such as piano keys stemming from his background in music, and video game Tetris-inspired blocks are integrated into the outer spaces of the piece. Different types and colors of marble are used much like the threads woven together in sadu, interlocking and intermingling slices to create a whole. Additionally, the choice of marble was no coincidence either as the artist grew up around his family’s own affinity for marble that motivated them to found a decades old business around the craft.
